Alzheimer's disease often has a devastating effect on the caregivers of those with this terrible illness. Caregivers—who are often family members—are usually confronted with two options. They either must provide round-the-clock care themselves, or place their loved ones in a nursing home.

Partners in Caregiving: the Dementia Services Program is a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The program funds the development of adult day centers across the country, community-based programs that care for elderly people suffering from Alzheimer's and other chronic conditions during the day, thus allowing them to remain at home. Adult day centers provide beneficial health, social, and support services during business hours. Besides providing a therapeutic environment for the person in need of care, the day centers allow caregivers to continue working or get much-needed time off.
